Hero

Webster Online Dictionary defines a hero as a person admired for his achievements and noble qualities. My mother serves as my hero. She helps to combat the evils of society such as substance abuse, addictions, anger management, homelessness and lack of education. Being the director of a youth work-force development program in New Orleans, she assists under privileged youth in breaking drug addictions and getting a better education for themselves. It also gives them the necessary skills to help them to seek employment after completion of the program. She confronts this problem head on because she knows it’s a huge thorn in the city’s side and is only getting worse as the days go on. She wants to give back and help these teens and young adults get on their feet and join the work-force of Louisiana. It’s her passion and drive to overcome poverty by reducing the high unemployment and crime rates in the area. She loves taking them under her wing and guiding them through the nine week course. For many it’s the only mother figure they have seen in their entire life. As far as I know, she doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
My mom confronts the problem not only for the students themselves but for herself as well. She also does it for the population that’s being serviced and their families. Not enough is currently being done to service the problem so she’s taking up the responsibility for herself. Because the crime and unemployment rates are so high in the area, it is clearly close to nothing is being done to suppress the problem. Café Reconcile is one of the few places helping to minimize these rates and make the city a workable environment. The virtues my hero represents are similar to those of Beowulf. Loyalty, honesty, love, integrity, justice and morality are all the things she stands for when helping these underprivileged youth. They are taught with the care and love as if they were her own children. She hopes to instill the virtues that she possesses in them as well. If they graduate the program better than they came in then she knows she is sending the work environment and dedicated employee. This is way my mom is my hero.
